      Buy a pair of hockey skates. (See "How to Buy a Pair of Ice Skates for Hockey," under Related eHows).

      Select the protective equipment necessary. For the beginner this will include knee pads, a protective cup and jockstrap (for both sexes), a helmet with attached mouth guard, some hockey pucks, and a pair of hockey gloves.

      Try on all the equipment before playing, to make sure it's comfortable and fits properly.

      All of the equipment will have different settings. Adjust the equipment so that you can get the best fit. Because everything is adjustable, getting exactly the right size is not as important as always making sure to wear it.
