How to Jump Your Motocross Bike

The adrenaline pumping thrill of a motocross bike jump has few peers, even in extreme sports. Conquering a jump on your motocross bike gives you a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to go on to more advanced, daring tricks. Learning the jump takes practice and intuition, but a few tips help tremendously. So, follow these steps to jump your motocross bike.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather speed towards your jump as you move in a straight line. As you approach your target get into the standing position on the bike with your legs squeezing the seat of the bike tightly. Keep your knees slightly bent so you're not standing straight up.

    • 2

Punch the throttle as you hit the jump. Let the bike lift up under you as you maintain the standing position going into the air.

    • 3

Correct the angle of the bike in the air by pulling the clutch and dab the rear brakes to bring the front wheel down a bit in case the bike tips back. If the bike tips forward, release the clutch and give a small shot of throttle to bring the front wheel up so you can land the bike at an appropriate angle.

    • 4

Prepare for the landing by punching the throttle just before hitting the ground. Squat into the landing so your quadriceps and legs absorb the shock of the landing. As the bike hits the ground engage the throttle fully so the force of the landing transfers into a forward, rather than downward, movement.

    • 5

Experiment with moving your body forward and backward on the bike on successive jumps. Try to find the center of gravity that allows a neutral body position to take as much load as possible off of your spine and torso once you hit the ground.
