What Kind of Sock Should an Ice-Skater Wear?

Ice skates are very heavy, and they often put pressure on different points of your leg and foot, depending on the type of skate. Although most newer ice skates include a thick foam padding on the inside to protect your foot, wearing specific types of socks while you ice skate can greatly increase your comfort. With comfort in mind, wear socks based on the type of ice skating you're doing; if you are participating in recreational ice skating, for example, your needs are far different from the socks you need while figure skating or playing ice hockey.

Consider purchasing a pair of skate socks, whether you are a recreational ice skater or participating in an ice-skating sport. Skate socks are a thin sock made from a blend of moisture-wicking and synthetic fibers, and they often include a reinforced front panel for protection against the pressure of the laces. Some varieties may also include air vents and a reinforced arch. You can typically purchase these specialized socks at ice skate retailers and sport supply stores.

Take your skates with you when shopping for skate socks, if at all possible. Some retailers may allow you to try on a pair of socks before you purchase them, which will help you select the length of sock appropriate to your skate. If you cannot bring your skates or cannot try the socks on, approximate the length of sock you'll need to the skates you wear.

    • 3

Avoid purchasing socks manufactured with cotton. Cotton holds onto moisture, which can make long skating sessions uncomfortable, and it can begin to lose its shape after several washes.

    • 4

Look for socks with high elasticity. Socks with poor elasticity will lose their shape, and as they become looser, may fall and bunch up uncomfortably in your skate.

    • 5

Double up on socks. You may find it's more comfortable to wear two pairs of socks rather than one, so buy more than you believe you'll need.
