Tactics Used in Netball

The sport of netball has its roots, of course, in the very similar game of basketball. Netball is played by both genders but there are more women's teams than men's. Strategy is extremely important in this 60-minute game, and both offensive and defensive tactical maneuvers help to score goals. Improve your team's success by mastering techniques that will help you score and keep the other team from earning points.
  1. Proper Positioning and Movement

    • Your movement into various positions is key to gaining control of the game. There are several key tactics to practice so your positioning will be sharp and effective. With the lunge tactic, you lunge to the left, right or behind the defender when you have ball. You can also change direction quickly to get into a more open position. A sharp change in direction can place you in a good scoring or passing position. You can pivot to change position and confuse your opponents.

    Shooting

    • Only players who are allowed in the attacking goal circle are allowed to attempt a score, so the best shooters should be in these positions. These potential scorers should be adept at taking shots quickly, because there is little time in netball to set up for the goals. The scorers should concentrate on the back of the ring when making their shots. Encourage the best shooters on your team to develop balanced foot positioning and to practice controlling the ball on their fingertips.

    Catching

    • A good pass is never effective unless a good catch is made. Players need to be ready to accept the ball during play as often as it comes. Practice calling the ball when your position is good to help the passer identify an opening. Use an open-hand method to catch the ball when practicing for games. Spread your fingers wide and grasp the ball firmly when it reaches your hand. Prepare for different situations by jumping and lunging to catch balls that are flying to the left, right and in front of you.

    Passing

    • According to a BBC Sport Academy article, one netball rule says at least two passes have to be made before a team is allowed to go for a score. This means passing is a critical part of the game that your team should work on in practice. Work on passes under pressure from other players. Learn to spot your open player, move to a beneficial spot and pass with a significant amount of pace. You should also practice the fake pass, in which you move as though you are going to pass but do not. Following a fake pass, you can often quickly move to send a real pass.
