How to Create Standings

In sports, standings are used to help classify and rank teams or athletes according to their performances. Fans, sports enthusiasts and reporters can create their own standings to use during discussions about what is going on in a given sport. Many different pieces of criteria go into the formulation of these standings, from on-the-field performance to new player acquisitions. Programs such as Microsoft Excel will help sort the data within the standings.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new workbook in Microsoft Excel. Create and save a file under the name "standings." Place it either on your desktop or in a folder.

    • 2

Label the columns across the top according to sport the standings will represent. For example, if the standings are to be used to rank the performance of mixed martial artists, the column headers should be "Fighter's name," "Wins" and "Losses."

    • 3

Input the names of the athletes or teams into the "names" column. When dealing with individual players you might want to create a separate column for first and last name so you can sort the list by player name if needed.

    • 4

Input the win/loss record information into the appropriate column for each team or player. Check each entry to ensure the information is accurate because the information will be used to sort standings.

    • 5

Use the "data" option in the menu bar to sort the information according to your needs. For example, if you need to sort the standings by the team with the most wins, click on "data," then select the "wins" column as the sorting criteria. Click "ok" and the information will be sorted from the highest number of wins to the lowest.
