How to Build a Competition Cheer Team

Cheerleaders are commonly seen along the sidelines at football games or at the end of the court at basketball games. Encouraging the crowd and teams as well as communicating school spirit is a traditional role of cheer leading. Competitive cheer takes the sport to the next level and requires more of a coaching staff and the cheerleaders themselves. Building a competitive cheer team is a significant undertaking that provides opportunities for the participants.

Instructions

    • 1

Conduct research to determine if there is support and interest for a competition cheer team. Talk with school or organization leaders to get their input. Survey students and parents to determine if there is interest and the necessary commitment level.

    • 2

Research opportunities for competing. Gather as much information as possible regarding travel distance, fees and rules. Determine if transportation will be provided by the school or organization or by parents. Conduct an information meeting with interested students and parents to communicate information.

    • 3

Secure a practice facility that will be available as needed by the team. Make sure there are mats available for use when the team is learning new moves and routines.

    • 4

Conduct tryouts with a judged panel. Use cheer coaches, dancers and others with a background or interest in cheer to assess those trying out. Encourage those currently cheering for sports to try out.

    • 5

Establish guidelines with clear rules and consequences. Consider factors such as grades, attendance, behavior and dress and provide clear disciplinary actions when necessary. Communicate that practice is mandatory.

    • 6

Locate a choreographer and dance instructor if needed to assist the coaching staff with practices. Use a variety of means to provide the cheer leaders with as much of an advantage as possible when preparing for competition.
