How Do I Boil & Bite a Mouthguard?
Mouthguards are an important piece of equipment in sports and many levels, including professional, require them to be worn. The mouthguard itself is a composite of plastic that is soft enough not to damage the gums but gives enough support to keep the teeth from gnashing together and causing damage. They do need to be fitted to the individuals bite pattern and this can be done in the home.
Things You'll Need
- Pot of boiling water
- Tongs
- Bowl of cold water

1
Boil the water. The water will heat up the mouthguard and cause it it to become soft. If it is a single piece, you need tongs to dip it into the water.
-
2
Dip the mouthguard into the boiling water for 10 seconds. This will create enough heat through the mouthguard to make it pliable, but it will not burn your mouth.
-
3
Place the mouthguard into your mouth and gently bite down for a couple of seconds. This will create a mold for your teeth and will help keep the mouthguard secure in your mouth.
-
4
Dip the mouthguard in the cold water for 1 minute. This will cause the mouthguard to harden and keep the mold permanent.
