How to Overcome the Fear of a Horse After Being Thrown

Horses are large, strong animals. They can be frightening. Even more frightening is the experience being thrown by a horse. Once you've been thrown, it's not uncommon to develop a fear of riding again. If you love horses, this can cause a good deal of anguish. If you are determined to ride again, it is possible to take some steps to reach that goal. Riding again, and conquering your fear, are reasonable objectives that you can attain.

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss your fear with experienced riders. Tell them about your bad experience. Experienced riders are likely to have been thrown -- but they kept on riding. Get an outside perspective on your fear. Get encouraging advice.

    • 2

Spend time around horses. Feed them, lead them and groom them. Watch how they act, and see they are not threats. Working with horses out of the saddle can help you through your fear.

    • 3

Find a skilled riding instructor to work with one-on-one. Tell the instructor about your fear. A good and patient riding instructor will help ease you into riding again.

    • 4

Ride again when you are ready. Go for a short ride. Don't push the horse too hard --- or yourself. Enjoy the ride. Feel the freedom that riding a horse provides.
