How to Grind Skate Wheels

Aggressive inline skates allow riders to perform a variety of tricks, from jumping tricks to grinds, in which the skates slide along a railing or ledge at an angle in which the wheels are not rolling. The soul grind is a basic inline skating grind. The lead leg in the grind rides on the side of the foot, with the wheels running along the rail or ledge, while the rear leg is positioned with the middle wheels on either side of the rail or ledge to help maintain balance.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach the rail as close to parallel with it as possible.

    • 2

Skate at a moderate speed. Skating full-speed when learning to grind is dangerous; however, if you are moving too slowly, you will not slide far on the rail.

    • 3

Hop up off the foot opposite the side the rail is on.

    • 4

Place the foot closest to the rail down on the rail so that the outer half of your skate's sole is on the rail and the wheels are running next to the rail.

    • 5

Place your jumping foot on the rail behind the other foot, with your toe pointed in the direction matching its side --- meaning to your right if it is your right foot --- so that the rail is nestled between the middle wheels of your skate.

    • 6

Shift your weight so that it is slightly back-of-center, placing more weight on the sideways foot.

    • 7

Look forward down the rail as you ride.
