Weird & Unusual Sports Games

Sports have been an integral part of testing athletes since the times of the Ancient Greeks. The earliest Olympic games were held in the in the 8th century B.C. Ancient Mayans played a game called Pok-a-Tok that involved striking a ball through a stone circle using elbows, knees, and hips. People still test themselves with different sports but some are far more unusual then even the earliest sports.
  1. Races

    • Racing against a clock is not that unusual. Adding different types of obstacles, however, can make for a very weird race. The people of the North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough created a race that involves a seven-man team running 3 kilometers, with one man of the team on a rolling bed. The bed also has to be able to float as a section of race crosses a river.

    Chess Boxing

    • Enki Bilal created a comic book in 1992 titled "Equator Cold." In it he described a sport called chess boxing. Iepe Rubingh used that idea to create a real sport. A chess boxing match consists of 11 rounds. Two men alternate rounds of chess and then boxing. The two men are on 12-minute timers during the chess round and get 6 rounds of four minutes a piece. Boxing rounds are 3 minutes long. The winner is decided when one of the men gets checkmate in the chess round, times out in the on his 12-minute timer, retires, is knocked out, or a referee makes the decision that one man is unable to continue.

    Kabaddi

    • Kabbadi is a sport that is popular in rural India and other parts of Asia. Fourteen men separated into two teams of seven play twenty minute halves in a field 12.5 meters by 10 meters. The object is to send a man, called a raider, into the opposite teams half, who chants "kabbadi" while tagging as many of the opposing players in one breath and returns to his side. All tagged players are out. The opposing players try to hold the raider until he runs out of breath. If the raider runs out of breath, he is out. The players who are out represent points and the team with the highest number of points wins.

    Dwarf Throwing

    • Dwarf throwing seems like a cruel way to spend time. The little people, however, don't seem to mind and all across the world dwarf throwing is becoming a popular barroom sport. All one needs is a willing dwarf, some mattresses, a safety harness for throwing the dwarf, and pads for the dwarf. The person who throws the dwarf the farthest wins.
