How to Change Knots to MPH

Knot is a term for nautical miles per hour. MPH is an acronym for miles per hour, where miles means statute miles. The two miles are slightly different. Nautical miles are 1 minute of arc at the equator (where there are 60 minutes in a degree and 360 degrees in a circle).

Because both knots and MPH are measures of speed, one can be converted to the other.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the number of knots you want to convert. For example, 3 knots.

    • 2

      Multiply this by 1.15. For example, 3 * 1.15.

    • 3

Write down the result. This is the equivalent MPH for the number of knots. For example, 3 knots = 3.45 MPH.
