1
Make a list of sports that you already enjoy watching or playing. Alongside each sport, make a list of equipment that is utilized during play and the basic rules. Think about what aspects of each sport, and the equipment, might combine well with one another. For example, snowboarding was created as a combination of skateboarding and skiing, while disc golf (also known as "Frisbee golf") combined golf and the art of throwing a flying disc.
-
2
Draft a basic list of objectives and rules once you have determined what equipment and sporting ideas you would like to use. Make the objective of the game clear. Rules can be loosely defined at first, and refined as the game is tested.
-
3
Gather the required equipment and enough people to test the sport. Explain the basic rules of the game, along with the objective, and how the sport is intended to be played. Begin playing the game and answer questions about rules or procedure as they arise. Take the opportunity to talk about new rules, or adjustments to the game, with participants, and refine the sport as you play. Note any new rules developed during the course of play and update the new sport's outline to help you remember any changes during the next "practice."
-
4
Gather groups of people to play the new sport as often as possible. Videotape the games and post them to online forums or social networking sites to help your new sport gain popularity.
-
5
Refine the rules and procedures on an on-going basis. Remember, many professional sports update their rulebooks on a regular basis and your new sport should be no different.
