1
Read the official rules manual of the basketball league for which you intend to become a timekeeper. While basketball is largely the same across leagues, there are nonetheless slight differences between the NBA and a high school basketball team. Become familiar with the rules, especially the rules specifically pertaining to the time keeper and game time.
-
2
Create a list of all of the specific time-based obligations of the timekeeper. For example, timekeepers in most leagues have the responsibility of warning coaches with a horn that there are only 15 seconds remaining in a time out. By creating a list of time-based responsibilities, you can familiarize yourself with timekeeper responsibilities and stay organized, even in highly stressful and time-critical moments of basketball.
-
3
Practice timekeeping by watching games of basketballs. Individuals who seek jobs related to basketball are often lovers of the sport, so it is easy to get sucked into the game and forget your responsibilities. Watch several games of basketball and specially force yourself to become emotionally detached from the game. Focus on rules and time-related issues rather than the excitement of the match.

Read the manual of timekeeping device that you will be using. The scoreboard provides vital information to fans and teams, so it is crucial that the information is accurate. Learn how the device works from the manual or have a timekeeper veteran show you how to control the scoreboard.
