How to Get Rounder Ski Turns

The difference in the skill level of skiers can be easily identified by the skier's turn shape. Skiers turn to both change direction and to control your speed. Advanced skiers make sharp turns to dig into the snow to control their speed during fast runs. Sharp cut turns cannot be learned over night, so learning the basics of your turn shape will help you get comfortable with how your skis turn. Making rounder turns forming wide arches will help develop muscle memory, and practice will help you tighten up your turn shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin to "Snowplow" your skis. Make a triangle shape pointing the tips of the skis together. This will also help slow you down. You should be directed at the 12 o'clock position as if looking at the face of a clock.

    • 2

Place your weight on your inside ski. Shift and point your hips toward the three o'clock position as you lift your heel and turn your skis.

    • 3

Transfer your weight to your outside ski as you turn towards the four o'clock position. Repeat these steps to form wide turns as you ski down the slope.
