Options for Snow Pants
-
Ski Pants
-
Ski pants are the most logical choice for outside winter activities. Ski pants are constructed of a waterproof and breathable outer shell, with or without insulation. Keep in mind that stand-alone shells without insulation are best suited for aerobic activities. If you strive for ultimate snow performance, buy a pair outfitted with side venting and ankle gaiters.
Snowboard Pants
-
For the younger or more style-conscious snow warrior, snowboard pants will do the trick. Snowboard pants tend to have a baggier cut with more color options, including prints. Pair a solid jacket with printed pants for a fashionable snow ensemble. Even though snowboard pants are a fashion best choice, they do not lack technical functionality. With specialized fabrics, crotch venting and articulated padding, snowboard pants can go from the backyard to the slopes with the best of them.
Bibs
-
If your winter activities involve snowmobiling or falling in the snow, bib pants will keep you warmer and drier. With their high-top design, bib pants are perfect for preventing unwanted snow from sliding in from the top. Bibs tend to be bulkier than ski pants unless you opt for lightweight material. If this is your route, make sure to layer with warm polypropylene or fleece to keep you toasty. As some bibs make bathroom visits more difficult, mountaineering bibs come equipped with a drop trouser option where you unzip in the rear.
Soft Shell Pants
-
Soft shell pants are the latest craze in outdoor technology. These are made from a soft material, unlike other waterproof pants made of nylon. This makes soft shell pants the most comfortable of all the snow pants. Some soft shell fabrics are extremely waterproof and will protect you from the elements while skiing or snowboarding. Other fabrics are more suitable for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ice-climbing. The soft shell pant is flattering on women, lacking the bulk of nylon ski pants yet still providing room for a thin insulating layer underneath.
