1
Lace the laces through the eyelets of the boot, starting from the bottom. Pull the lace through one of the bottom eyelets, cross the tongue and pull the lace through the other eyelet. Pull each end of the lace until an even length extends from each bottom eyelet. Cross the tongue diagonally and up with one end of the lace ends and push it through the next boot eyelet. Do the same with the other end of the lace. Cross the tongue diagonally and up with each end of the lace ends -- threading them through the eyelets -- working your way up to the top of the boot.

2
Position the teardrop shaped lace lock so the hole for the release button is facing away from the tongue. Invert the teardrop lock so the narrow end points toward the toe of the boot. Slide both ends of the lace into the hole at the narrow end of the lace lock housing and out of the slit at the wide end. Pull one lace end to one side of the slit and the other to the opposite.

3
Push a friction gear into the slit of the lock housing in between the two lace ends. Clip the release button framing to the lock housing by putting the button knob in the button hole and squeezing the housing and the release button frame together. Slide the breakaway lace cap over one of the ends of the lace. Put the two ends of the lace together and tie a knot in them. Slide the lace cap over the knot.
