Kids Snowboard Packages
-
Identification
-
A kids snowboard package will include the big 3: snowboard, boots and bindings. Many major snowboard companies have gear designed specifically for kids. Gear will obviously be smaller, but it should also feature more relaxed. Forgive geometry and design to allow for progressive learning. There are less options for kids snowboard packages than adult packages, but that will make choosing one that much easier. Snowboard packages can be purchased or rented at a snowboard shop.
Size
-
You'll want to purchase a snowboard and boots that are correctly sized so that your child is able to learn and develop without the difficulty and safety concerns of poorly-sized gear. This is the most important factor in purchasing a kids snowboard package. Boots should fit snugly, despite the fact that your child is growing. Loose boots will make snowboarding difficult and could present a hazard. Snowboards are sized in centimeters and should be fit based on weight and height. Sizes available will vary by board, but snowboards designed for kids usually fall between 100 and 145.
A general rule in sizing a board is that it should stand between the chin and nose. If your child is heavier than average, you want a board to be slightly longer and stiffer to support the extra weight. Alternately, a shorter, more flexible snowboard should be used if your child is thinner. Review weight guidelines for the specific boards that you are considering. You could purchase a snowboard that is slightly longer to allow for room to grow. However, keep in mind that a longer board will be more difficult to control and learn on. Also make sure that your child's boots fit the snowboard and bindings. Boots should be close to flush with the board's edges without much overhang or space between boot and edge. Consider a wider or narrower board as needed.
Considerations
-
While a snowboard package may seem like an excellent gift idea, it is best to bring your child to the shop to get sized out, especially for boots. Given the importance of proper boot fit, getting a boot that is slightly too large or small could greatly hinder their progress. Although boot/shoe size is a great guideline, the only way to know for sure is to try boots on.
Benefits
-
There's no way of telling if your child will like snowboarding. Although you may love it and may be eager to get them started, they might not react to it the way you hope. Snowboard gear can get expensive. Consider renting a snowboard package the first time--or even first season or two--to allow your child to experience the sport without the obligation of expensive equipment purchases.
Potential
-
If you have a child who has snowboarded before, you'll have a different set of considerations. While you want a snowboard that is as short and flexible as possible for a beginner, more advanced riders will require more specific equipment. Consider the type of riding that your child does. Purchase a board built for this style. There are snowboards built specifically for freestyle (park, pipe and jibbing), free ride (built for carving and powder), and all around styles that are good for a versatile rider. Freestyle boards should be on the shorter and softer side, but free ride boards should be longer and stiffer.
Types
-
While not every company has a kid's line, major manufacturers like Burton and Ride offer a number of different snowboards, boots and bindings specifically for children. Other big companies like K2, Salomon and Forum offer one or two kid's boards. It shouldn't be difficult to find all the equipment you need for an excellent kids snowboard package. Many retailers also sell specific kids snowboard packages with all equipment included in one package price.
