How to Get Confidence in Soccer

Sports are as much a mental game as they are physical. One of these mental components, self confidence, can ruin your soccer ability quicker than almost any other. To become an effective soccer player, take time to intentionally build confidence in yourself. The process of focused confidence, when practiced over time, will make you a strong player without letting you get too overconfident in yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Credit yourself when you succeed. Recognize when you block the opposing team from entering your team's territory or scoring. Notice how you assist other players, so that they can score goals.

    • 2

Study soccer strategy. Just as in football, soccer has plays designed to lead to shots on goal. The more you know about strategy, the more likely you'll know the right strategy to implement in any given situation. This will give you confidence.

    • 3

Watch and imitate better players. Pay attention to how better players attempt moves that you could improve on. Ask them how to perform the move, or ask them to practice with you.

    • 4

Face the ball, no matter what. Commit to doing your part with the ball whenever it's passed to you. For example, don't pass the ball to another teammate if there's not an opponent in your area. Carry the ball as far as you can and pass it on.

    • 5

Talk positively. In other words, don't berate yourself. Believe that you can execute on the field. If you've practiced well, know strategy and think before you act, you'll do well. Believe in yourself.
