1
Determine a basis for your shield. For example, consider your club colors. Research your club's history, if it has any, to find out nicknames, mottoes, including Latin phrases, and the date the club was formed. Combine your club colors, nicknames, mottoes and formation date in a stylish way.

2
Look at existing soccer club badges for design inspiration. Many clubs have modernized their badges within the last few decades, so their shields are now less cluttered and more stylized. Print out any badges that inspire you.

3
Draw a few different sketches using your sketchpad and colored pencils. Think about how you can succinctly and stylishly encapsulate all of the details you wish to include on your badge without cluttering it up. Test your designs for clutter by getting a family member, friend or soccer teammate to look at it and be able to explain each part of it -- your shield should be obvious to them. For example, the Vancouver Whitecaps' badge clearly shows white mountains, which any casual observer could identify and understand.

Sketch up a few different designs before presenting them to your soccer club's players and management. Open up an anonymous vote for a favorite design to ensure that the majority of the club are happy with the final badge.
