How to Try Out for an MLS Team

If it's your dream to play professional soccer for a Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise in North America, it will take a lot of work and determination. But if you're already a skilled athlete, you know the importance of these traits. Above having exceptional skill, getting a shot at playing in the MLS requires an extensive soccer background, preparation and sometimes, being in the right place at the right time. It's not impossible to attend an open tryout for a team and get signed.

      Write your resume as it relates to your soccer experience. Include a list of teams for which you've played, your complete statistics for those teams, camps and clinics you've attended and a list of soccer-related references from managers, coaches and scouts.

      Compile a highlight DVD of your best soccer moments. Ensure it has clear titles at the beginning, including your name, vital information and contact numbers.

      Browse the websites for each MLS team, or the team in your area, to determine if and when each is holding open tryouts. Tryouts are most common in the early spring, prior to the start of the MLS season in late March.

      Contact the club to register for the open tryout, if required.

      Attend the open tryout and play your best under the watchful eye of team scouts and coaching staff.

      Leave your resume and highlight DVD with the team for the coaches to review, if they so choose.
