What Are the Slowpitch Softball ASA Rules?

The ASA, or Amateur Softball Association of America, is a non-profit organization that promotes the sport of softball. To join the ASA, you must love the softball and understand the rules of the game. The rules of slowpitch softball are somewhat different than those of fastpitch softball.
  1. Pitching

    • In slowpitch softball, the pitcher must deliver the ball underhanded. The ball must then have an arc of no less than six feet and no more than 12 feet.

    Time Frame

    • Softball, unlike baseball, consists of only seven innings. Furthermore, unless the score is tied, the game will stop after 50 minutes.

    Base Stealing

    • Unlike baseball and fastpitch softball, there is absolutely no base stealing in slowpitch softball. The runner may run as soon as the pitch is thrown, but must return to the base if the ball is not hit.

    Field Dimensions

    • All of the bases are 65 feet apart. The umpire will also declare ground rules before each game, telling both teams what is considered in play and what is foul area.

    Minimum Number of Players

    • No team can have fewer than eight players. If a player arrives late, she must report to the umpire, who will then allow her to join her teammates.
