How to Grip a Softball Curveball

A curve-ball is a type of fastball pitch that usually consists of a backspin. The spin of a curve-ball moves in the opposite direction, causing it to break or drop down, sweeping horizontally as it approaches home plate. The pitcher creates the down-spin of the ball by rolling his palm and fingers over the top of the ball while he releases it.

  1. How to Grip a Softball Curveball

    • 1

Place the thumb under the ball. It should probably be at the seven- or eight-o’clock position.

    • 2

Look at the seam on the ball and place the base of the U or horseshoe facing towards the palm. This will help to control the ball while pitching. Force on either finger will lead to a different spin on the ball.

    • 3

Place the index finger directly on the left seam. Place the middle finger in the middle of the U or horseshoe and the ring finger on the right seam.

    • 4

Throw the ball like a fastball. You want to pull down the front of the ball to increase the rate of rotation. It should reach nearly 13 revolutions from the time it leaves the pitcher's hand to when it gets to home base.

    • 5

Continue moving your arm even after the ball has left your hand. Your arm should naturally relax and bend immediately following the release. It should then continue up until the arm is at least waist high.
