How to Remove the Barrel on a Winchester Model 1894

Winchester Repeating Arms produced over 7.5 million Model 1894s, one of the world's most popular rifles. The lever-action 1894 continues to be a top seller and is coveted by antique firearm aficionados as an integral part of Old West history. Instructions

    • 1

Unload the magazine and chamber of the firearm. Switch the hammer safety to the "On" position. Some 1894s have an additional safety in front of the trigger guard. If your model has this additional safety, switch it to "On."

    • 2

Remove the magazine plug screw on the underside of the magazine tube. The plug is under pressure from the magazine spring and will jump out of the tube if proper pressure is not applied.

    • 3

Pull the magazine cap-spring and follower from the magazine tube.

    • 4

Locate the front and rear bands that hold together the magazine tube and barrel. Remove the front and rear bands by unscrewing the two screws located on each side of the bands. Once unscrewed the bands will fall off, freeing the magazine tube.

    • 5

Slide the magazine tube out of the receiver housing.

    • 6

Tilt the wood grip off the front of the barrel and pull it away. The barrel is now free.
