How to Position Arm and Hands When Pistol Shooting

It's important to have your arm and hands in the correct positions when you're learning to shoot a pistol. Practice at a shooting range regularly in order to get comfortable in the proper stance. Control the gun and shoot accurately with correct positioning.

      Position your finger with safety in mind. Never put the trigger finger (index finger) of your hand on the trigger until you are ready to discharge the gun. Always let it rest on the side of guns.

      Put your bottom three fingers around the grip of the gun if you shoot guns right-handed. Place your thumb over the back side of the hand grip of the gun. Extend your right arm and lock your elbow. (Shooting guns using this method fatigues your arm more quickly.)

      Shoot by using a two-arm position as another method in pistol shooting. Take the gun in one hand and wrap your other hand around your first hand. "Marry" your thumbs. Marrying your thumbs means that your thumbs meet each other and cross each other over the back of the pistol. Bend your elbows slightly. This gives you more control over guns when you are pistol shooting. Remember that different calibers have different recoil. Get familiar with the guns you are shooting so that you know how strong the recoil is.

      Practice drawing your pistol from a holster. Wrap your hand around the grip. Pull the gun out of the holster while pushing the pistol forward with your arm. Raise your other arm simultaneously and your hand automatically meets the pistol hand, giving you a two-handed stance.
