How to Wear a Swimcap

Swim caps are latex or silicone coverings worn on the head by competitive and recreational swimmers. They protect the hair from exposure to chlorine and other chemicals in a swimming pool. Swim caps also help swimmers keep hair out of their faces while swimming and prevents hair tangles. Latex swim caps are typically less expensive and can be stretched to accommodate most children and adult head sizes. Silicone swim caps are more durable and commonly are used by people who have latex allergies. Swim caps come in a variety of colors and designs to meet the needs of the wearer.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold your head toward the floor.

    • 2

Gather all of the hair by starting at the hairline and pulling down to form a ponytail. Make sure all hair is collected in the ponytail before securing with a fabric ponytail holder. Position the ponytail about 6 inches from the nape of the neck.

    • 3

Clip back short hair using flat hair clips. Choose hair clips that are rounded at the ends not pointed as this could tear the swim cap.

    • 4

Hold the swim cap on opposite sides using both hands. Keep the thumb on each hand on the inside of the swim cap while the other fingers secure the cap on the outside. The opening of the swim cap should be visible.

    • 5

Pull the swim cap onto the head as you look down toward the floor. The front of the cap should be placed along the forehead first. Pull back the swim cap until it reaches the nape of the neck.

    • 6

Stand back up straight and look into a mirror to check for loose strands of hair. Tuck your ears and any loose hairs into the swim cap. Make sure the center crease of the cap begins at the forehead and ends at the nape of the neck.
