Summer Camps for Kids Learning How to Swim

During the summer many kids elect to learn to swim or strengthen the aquatic skills they already have. Swimming camps allow students to gain more confidence in their skills as well as to overcome any weaknesses. Students progress through different levels of instruction beginning with an introductory level up to more advanced stroke techniques, such as freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.
  1. Summer Swim Camps

    • Improve swimming skills by signing up for summer camps. Physique Swim Camp in New Jersey, Menlo Swim and Sport in California and YMCA Swim Camp in New York are just some of the many summer schools that offer swimming instructions for kids beginning to discover the sport. Strengthen skills and learn new techniques like different swim strokes and safety tips while in the water. Camp Menlo Swim, like many camps nationwide, offers campers daily swim lessons with instructors, pool play time, group games and craft games.

    Levels and Activites

    • Choose a class level appropriate for the swimmer. Physique Swim School offers different levels so that swimmers can learn at their own pace. Beginner levels I and II are designed for students just starting to get comfortable in the water. Skills taught include submerging underwater, exhaling in the water, floating prone and supine and kicking front and back crawls. The beginner II course aims to expand on the fundamentals of aquatic movement and safety skills. Groups are divided by age and gender with an average ratio of six children per counselor. All of Physique Swim School's instructors and counselors are Red Cross-certified in lifeguarding, first aid and CPR, as they are in most camps across the nation. Additionally, the camp maintains an on-site health center.

    Schedule and Time Frame

    • The class schedules for swim camp varies depending on the facility, but different time slots typically are available to accommodate both the students' and parents' needs. Menlo Swim and Sport, for example, offers weekly summer camps starting in mid-June until the end of August. The camp also offers an extended care program held at the recreation center until 6 p.m.

    Registration

    • Register for summer sessions early to secure a spot for the swim class that fits your schedule. Classes are often limited to a specific number of students so you may want to register ahead of time. For example, YMCA of New York allows participants to register for camp online and requires a completed registration form. Expect to provide information such as emergency contact, transportation and payment information. Physique Swim School allows registrants to drop in in-person or mail the registration form and payment to the school's address. Inquire about any special discounts that may available. Menlo Swim and Sport offers a sibling discount of 10 percent off each additional sibling registrant.
