How to Get the Grime Off of Swim Goggles

Swimmers use goggles to protect their eyes while in the water and for increased visibility. Chlorine in pools and salt from the ocean irritate eyes, so it's advantageous to keep goggles in good working order to prevent eye problems. In addition, residue from chlorine and salt can cloud and collect on goggle lenses if they are not consistently maintained. Proper cleaning of goggles after each use and frequent deeper cleaning helps the goggles last longer, and keeps visibility at a premium.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the goggles after each use with tap water. Do not use fingers to wipe the goggles because of oils on fingertips and rough edges which might scratch the lens. Hang the goggles on a hook or flat on a towel and allow to air dry.

    • 2

Store the goggles in a case when dry to protect them from scratching.

    • 3

Remove stains and water residue by mixing equal amounts of water and white vinegar in a bowl. Soak the goggles in the mixture for an hour. Swish the goggles in the bowl before removing and then rinse with tap water. Hang the goggles up to air dry.

Put on latex gloves and rub standard toothpaste gently on the goggle lens if water spots or grime remain. Make sure that the toothpaste is not gel or the kind with a grainy texture. Let the toothpaste sit on the goggles for a few minutes, then rinse well with tap water.

Rinse the goggle straps regularly with water to keep chlorine or salt residue away from the lens.
