How to Choose Swim Goggles

Swim goggles can be useful for both recreational and competitive swimmers. Goggles keep water out of your eyes and allow you to see under the water clearly. In order for goggles to be useful they must not only keep water out of your eyes, but they must be comfortable enough to wear for long periods of time spent swimming. By taking a few things into consideration when you choose swim goggles, you can make sure that you select a quality pair that will fit correctly and last a long time.

Determine the style of goggles you like most. Standard swim goggles are common, but larger mask-type goggles that cover both eyes with a single lens are also available. Standard swim goggles are a fine choice for use in a swimming pool. If you will be swimming in the ocean or a lake, the added visibility that mask-type goggles provide can be beneficial.

Consider tinted lenses if you will be swimming outside. Even if you are swimming indoors, if the lighting is too bright a set of tinted goggles can help you avoid having to squint while wearing them. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, some goggles are available that have ultraviolet protection as well.

Choose goggles that fit correctly. To determine fit, visit a local sporting goods store and try on different sizes. When a pair of goggles is pressed against your face they should compress slightly and the small amount of suction produced should hold them to your face. Make sure they are not too tight, however. This will make them uncomfortable to wear for a long period of time. Goggles should be tight enough to seal out water, but not so tight that they leave red rings around your eyes.

Inspect the goggles to see if they have antifog protection. Goggles without this protection tend to cloud up as soon as you get in the water. Even if the goggles are fog protected, they can still occasionally become a bit hazy. If this happens, put a few drops of water inside of the goggles and spread the water around to clear away the haze.

Select goggles that have a strong band to goes around your head. Less expensive goggles tend to have bands that stretch out over time, and the goggles won't stay in place while swimming. Purchase a pair of goggles with a quality band to prevent the need to replace the band as often.
