How to Install Windscreens on a Tennis Court

Installing windscreens on a tennis court has a number of benefits. Cutting down on the wind flow across the court is the primary benefit, but the windscreens also help dampen outside sounds and serve as a privacy screen, keeping prying eyes to a minimum. In general, tennis court windscreens are made of three types of materials: polyester, polyethylene and polypropylene. Windscreens are also graded on weave density. Installing a windscreen on your tennis court can be done with common hand tools and in just a few steps.

      Measure the fence around your tennis court. Measure the height from just underneath the top rail down to the tension bars on the bottom of the fence. Measure each section of fence from just inside each terminal post. Measure the distance between the stretcher bars around the fence posts as well. Measure the gate and the section of fence above the gate in the same manner.

      Decide how much of a gap, if any, you want to have on the top or bottom of the fence; typical 10-foot fences have a gap of 1 foot on the bottom, but can be set up to have a 2-foot gap on the bottom and top. Add all the widths together to determine what size windscreen roll you need; the gate and transom section should not be included in the total measurement, as they need to be made as separate pieces.

      Hang the end of the windscreen, starting on one side of the gate entrance, in the desired upper position. Place the windscreen in a way so that the seams and hems all face outward.

      Use a zip-tie or ty-rap threaded through the grommet in the upper corner to attach the windscreen to the fence, just inside the fence post, using a ladder. Fasten the top of the windscreen in the same manner in that section or fence, pulling on the windscreen to ensure that it is taut but not overly so -- there should be a slight amount of give between grommets. Continue fastening the top of the windscreen all the way around the court in this manner.

      Fasten the side and the bottom of the windscreen in the same manner, brushing your hand along the surface to ensure that it is flush against the fence without wrinkles.

      Fasten the anti-billowing tape to the bottom and the top of the windscreen in the middle of each fence panel if your windscreen comes equipped with anti-billow tabs. Secure the tape with zip-ties or ty-raps as an added precaution.

      Attach the windscreen to the gate transom and gate door in the same manner.
