Looking for a Tennis Racket for Young Kids
-
Junior Tennis Gear
-
Junior tennis rackets vary in size from 21 to 26 inches. Usually made from a titanium alloy, junior rackets are very sturdy and your child will likely outgrow the racket before it needs replacing. Don't let your child play tennis with inappropriate footwear. Sandals and flip-flops are a no-no. You don't need to purchase specialized tennis footwear right away, but do make sure your child wears well-fitting athletic shoes on the tennis court. Most tennis clubs don't permit denim jeans or shorts and some require collared shirts for boys.
Buying a Junior Racket
-
Sporting goods stores generally carry an ample supply of youth rackets. Don't consult with just any employee, but ask to speak with someone who has a broad knowledge of racket sports. Alternatively, tennis clubs often have a pro shop where you can ask a tennis professional or experienced employee for their recommendations regarding youth rackets and which kind would work best for your child. Tennis clubs often permit your child to try a racket before you buy it.
Secondhand Rackets
-
Your child will benefit more from a gently used racket that's the right size and grip rather than a new or borrowed racket that's the wrong fit. Search online sites for used tennis rackets in excellent condition. Then, if your child still loves playing tennis and is ready move up to the next size, you'll feel confident when purchasing that you aren't throwing away your money.
Considerations
-
Get your child off to a great start in tennis by enrolling him in a local tennis camp or arrange for a few private lessons from a tennis pro. Your children won't have to worry about correcting bad habits later if they learn the right way in the first place. Make tennis a family sport by taking lessons yourself. When your child is older, tennis will be a sport for you to have in common.
