How to Hit a Tennis Ball Low & Hard

Watching a champion like Roger Federer play tennis is like watching art and strategy in motion. When Federer hits his ball low and hard, it makes it harder for his opponent to return, causing more errors.

Rigidly holding your racket flat faced, drive the racket forward and swing, bouncing the ball off the racket. Keeping your body straight, face your body frame to the side of court the ball is coming from. Keep your elbows and wrists rigid. This provides maximum control while delivering energy to the ball through the muscles in your shoulders and torso.

Step in with a good long forward step, staying well balanced on your front leg before stroking the ball. Bend at the knees. Hit the ball with smooth strokes. Tennis requires a clear mind and active body. Don't cloud your thoughts by thinking about hitting low and hard each time. Rely on positioning your body correctly and hitting the ball using the same strategy every time.

Starting with your racket low, hit the ball from low to high to put a topspin on your ball. This causes the ball to spin from top to bottom. Topspin pulls it down into the court, giving you more control over the flight path of the ball. It lets you hit it hard and over the net while still landing on your opponent's side of the court, giving you more control. A topspin hit makes it go faster than any other type of swing.
