How to Determine When to Restring Your Racket

The frequency with which you should restring your tennis racket depends largely on how often and vigorously you play. Professional tennis players use a freshly strung racket everyday, while some amateurs will go years without ever restringing (this is not recommended). When determining whether your racket needs to be restrung, there are a variety of factors to consider.

Think about how serious you are as a tennis player. If you are a professional, your tennis racket should be restrung every one to two days. If you are serious amateur who enjoys participating in competitions, you should restring your racket before every tournament. If you are a casual player who doesn't participate in formal competitions, there will be greater variability in when you should restring your racket.

Determine how many times you play tennis each week. If you play seven days a week, your tennis racket should be restrung at least seven times a year. If you play six days a week, your tennis racket should be strung at least six times a year. The general rules is that for as many days as you play each week, that is the minimum number of times you need to restring your racket each year.

Listen to the ball hitting the racket while you play. When the racket has been freshly strung, the ball will make a crisp "ping" sound against it. If the ball makes a "thud" against the strings, it is time to change them.

Pay attention to how the racket feels while you are playing. When a racket needs to be restrung, your hits will feel sluggish, mushy and weak.
