Grip Size of Tennis Rackets

Choosing the proper grip size is an important part of any tennis racket purchase. Finding a grip size that is both comfortable and effective can positively affect a tennis player's performance.
  1. Size

    • A tennis racket's grip size refers to the circumference of the racket handle and overlaying rubber grip, and is usually measured a few inches away from the bottom of the handle. Racket handle circumferences are generally offered in 1/8-inch variations from 4 inches all the way up to 4 3/4 inches.

    Considerations

    • Players must consider several factors when selecting a grip size. Those with smaller hands might have difficulty controlling rackets with larger grips, while those who have bigger hands might find smaller grips don't allow them to generate sufficient swing power. Smaller grips also require more squeeze to maintain control, which can lead to hand problems.

    Benefits

    • Some players will opt to use an "overgrip" on their tennis rackets. This is a plastic sleeve or wrap that fits over the racket handle to provide extra girth. The overgrip allows players to change their grips sizes as they see fit, meaning they can opt for a smaller grip and add an overgrip if they find that the existing handle is too small.
