How to Customize Running Spikes

Spiked running shoes allow for better grip on the trail or on the track. They give that extra boost or push-off that allows for stronger, faster running. Unlike regular, spike-free trainers or flats, they don't allow for slipping during the kick back of the stride. However, many runners don't know that these tools can be tweaked for a better fit and feel and give even better results. Like the shoe itself, spikes should have a comfortable, custom feel that will result in top performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the spikes from the shoes using the spike wrench.

    • 2

Shave some of the rubber or plastic from the sole of the shoe. Most runners prefer to carry the least amount of weight possible on their feet. The longer the distance the runner plans to cover, the more of the sole needs to be left in place.

    • 3

Screw the spikes back into the shoes. Some runners prefer a tighter spike versus a loose one. Make sure not to leave any spike too loose, because it is possible for them to fall out while running.

    • 4

Remove and change the insole of the shoes. The standard insoles that come with track spikes don't often fit all runners. A custom fit insole may be a better option.

    • 5

Tighten or loosen the laces for a better fit. Walk or jog a few steps before running. This will test the fit of the shoes and prevent any possible discomfort while running.
