1
Plan well in advance for decathlon participation. You will need at least a year of training if you are a novice to decathlons, in decent shape, have some experience with some of the events and the time to dedicate to training.
-
2
Secure a coach and proper equipment if you are serious about being a decathlete. Decathlons aren't like other sports where you can focus on only the techniques and skills that help you succeed in one discipline. You must have the skills to master 10 events, so you must choose a coach accordingly.
-
3
Concentrate on conditioning. While aerobic training isn't as important to decathlon success, you still must be able to make it through 2 days of grueling events without becoming fatigued. Strenuous anaerobic training is a must if you want to be successful.
-
4
Schedule 2 technical sessions and a running session in each training session. Be sure to spend more time on your weaker events when focusing on the technical sessions.
-
5
Focus on speed and power in your training sessions. Theses are the 2 most important factors in being a top decathlete. Strength and speed are required in practically all of the events.
-
6
Eat well, stay hydrated and give your body plenty of time to rest during training, especially as the date of the decathlon nears. You don't want to tax your body so hard that there is nothing left to give when it's time to compete.
