How to Train for a Sprint Triathlon

Triathlons are becoming more and more popular. Sprint triathlons are the shortest triathlons. In a sprint triathlon, participants swim 0.5 kilometers, bike 20 kilometers, and run 5 kilometers. They are a great way to get into the sport and get in shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Focus on the weakest sport. Spend extra time training for this portion of the triathlon. This helps improve performance in the weak sport and builds confidence.

    • 2

Commit to a race. Pay the fees and mark it on the calendar. Nothing motivates you better than knowing a competition is coming up.

    • 3

Purchase necessary equipment. Make sure everything needed for the swim, the bike and the run are there for race day. There are also many things available that are unnecessary, such as triathlon suits and bikes. These improve times, but are not required. Using the same equipment to train with also helps reduce times overall.

    • 4

Mix it up. The greatest thing about a triathlon is the opportunity to train for any of the three sports. There is rarely any boredom, and the cross-training actually prevents injuries.

    • 5

Be consistent. Work out daily. Improvement depends on practice and fitness levels do too.

    • 6

Start small and take it slow. This is true for all the sports. Injury is caused by overuse and over-training. In the end, taking it slow is much better than going too fast and getting injured.

    • 7

Add transitions to workouts close to the race. Transitions are difficult at first. Trying to go from swimming to cycling to running takes practice. Add bricks to workouts to train muscles to adjust to transitions. Practice transitions themselves to reduce time on race day.
