The Standard Measurement of Volleyball Courts

Volleyball courts maintain largely standard measurements across competitive levels, ranging from youth and high school competitions to the Olympics. Courts are marked with lines that are required to be two inches wide.
  1. Basics

    • The volleyball net, which the ball must clear when it is hit, is 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches high for men and 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches for women. Beneath the net is the center line, which court measurements use a basis. The court is 59 feet long on either side of the center line, and it is 29 feet, 6 inches wide. The ball must land within that area in order to be considered in play.

    Net area

    • The sub zone is a 3-foot area on either side of the net. This is where substitutions enter and exit the court. The attack line is marked 9 feet, 10 inches away from the net on each side. The attack line separates the front row of players from the back row of players.

    Perimeter

    • There must be a zone free of obstructions surrounding the court that is a minimum of 9 feet, 10 inches wide. Above the court must be an area of 23 feet in height that is free of obstructions that could impede the flight of the ball. The service area at the end of the court extends 8 inches beyond the end line.
