About Volleyball Drills

A fundamental way to get better at any sport is by practicing basic skills repeatedly, or drilling. If you want to become an all-around volleyball player, drills should focus on offense, defense, strategy and conditioning
  1. Skills

    • Volleyball drills that aim to improve basic skills typically focus on passing, setting, spiking, serving and blocking.

    Conditioning

    • Volleyball conditioning drills can include running, quickly stopping and starting and jumping. Conditioning should typically be done in the pre-season and off-season.

    Strategy

    • Strategy drills are team-oriented and typically undertaken after individual skills have been honed. These skills often focus on running offensive plays and team defense.

    Specialties

    • Players that focus on one area of the game will usually drill much more on specific skills, rather than overall play. For example, the libero is a back row, defense-only position, so drills will more often focus on digging spikes and passing.

    Improvement

    • Once players hone their basic skills, they can move up to drills that focus on more complex play, such as running quick sets, jump serving and hand passing.
