Know the rules for water polo in order to build a foundation on which you can win. You can find them on the U.S. Water Polo Association site. One rule that is a great defensive way to take advantage of the other team in water polo is to keep the ball handler from being able to advance the ball inside the two-meter line while the receiver has already advanced to inside that line. Because offensive players have to move quickly and decisively, if you can keep the offense from getting the ball inside the two-meter line while they have a player beyond that line, you will instantly get the ball back. Such an offensive maneuver is illegal in water polo.

Be physical inside the five-meter line. The five-meter line is the area of the pool in which the offensive team must score and the defensive team must not foul. If you have the ball and out-muscle your opponents in this area, you can strategically earn fouls inside the five-meter line. This gets your team a penalty shot. Any points you can earn in this manner during the game can help you tremendously toward winning the game.

Rack up on penalties against the other team. The main penalties in water polo are splashing water in the face of an opponent, plunging an opponent who doesn't have the ball under water and interfering with a free throw. If you can play physically enough in the water polo game, you can strategically encourage penalties against your opponents. When any of these penalties happen, the offending player is removed from the game for 20 seconds, and you have a prime opportunity to out-man the other team and hit the goal.

Score more points than the other team. A goal in water polo is when you pass the ball between the posts and completely under the cross bar that your opponent is defending. Use strategy to maneuver the ball into your goal more often than the other team hits its goal.

Water polo is a grueling sport that requires a high-level of physical prowess in order to last an entire game. Practice your ball handling skills and your passing abilities. Develop a true chemistry with your teammates.
