J/30 Sailboat Specifications

The J/30 class of sailboat was produced though the 1990s, and the boat still enjoys wide use today as a on-design racer, according to BoatU.S. The boat performs well when sailed flat but needs crew weight on the windward rail when conditions reach 15 knots or more. Designed as a one-design racer, the boat can often be found in mixed-fleet races as well.

    • The J/30 has an overall length (LOA) of 29.92 feet, with a waterline length (LWL) of 25 feet, according the J/30 Class Association. The boat has an 11.18-foot beam and draws 5.25 feet of water. The factory displacement of the boat is 6,000 lbs. with 2,100 lbs. of ballast and a sailing weight closer to 6,500 lbs.

    Sail Area

    • The J/30 is a fractionally rigged sloop capable of flying a main, jib, genoa and spinnaker. The main has a sail area of 247 square feet, the jib has 196 square feet, the genoa 294 square feet and the spinnaker 704 square feet, according to the J/30 Class Association. The boat also has a 15-horsepower auxiliary inboard diesel engine.

    Other Specifications

    • When sailing in a mixed fleet, the J/30 has a performance handicap racing fleet (PHRF) rating of between 129 and 155 depending on the rig used and the organization assigning the PHRF, according to the J/30 Class Association. The boat has teak toe rails and trim, a self-bailing cockpit, four below-deck berths and other amenities that also make it suitable for use as a day sailer or occasional cruiser.
