How do I Repair a Surfboard and Remove Brown Spots?

Surfing is a relaxing way to enjoy the ocean and also get some exercise. After a few surfing sessions you may notice that your surfboard is beginning to look grimy and covered with brown patches. These brown patches are an accumulation of sand that works its way into the wax of your surfboard. Not only does this ruin the aesthetic beauty of a sleek surfboard, but will also irritate and scratch the skin that is not covered by your wet suit. Knowing how to maintain your surfboard is an important skill for any surfer.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your surfboard in the sun and let it sit there for a while until the wax on the board has softened. Softer wax will be easier to scrape off than stiff wax.

    • 2

Scrape your surfboard with a board scraper to remove the old wax. If you do not have a board scraper, any thin and stiff tool can substitute, even an old credit card.

    • 3

Remove the last bit of wax by soaking a rag in turpentine and rubbing it over the surfboard.

    • 4

Remove your new block of wax from its packaging and grip it in your hand as if you were using a sponge. Wax your surfboard by first rubbing the wax across the board, and then lengthwise. The wax does not need to be evenly spread out, but make sure every part of the board is covered. It's fine if your surfboard is lumpy from the wax, this will actually help you in retaining a grip on your board while you surf.
