Scuba Diving Equipment Checklist
-
Tanks and Weights
-
If not supplied by the shop then divers should establish that they have full tanks and enough weight to make the dive. (Weighting is established on buoyancy checks during initial diver training.)
BCD (Buoyancy Control Device)
-
The BCD should be checked for leaks and functionality of the inflator hose before diving. This can be done by attaching it to a regulator and tank and checking the inflator buttons and bladder intactness. Also establish that the air dump valves are working by pulling all of the cords.
Regulator Set
-
Establish that the regulator is functioning, by attaching it to a tank and breathing from the mouthpieces, both on the primary and the alternate. Check the pressure gauge is working when the tank is turned on.
Mask, Snorkel and Fins
-
Mask, snorkel and fins should all be checked to establish that the straps are functional and of good fit. Try and carry strap spares at all times for mask and fins, to avoid having to cancel a dive. It can also be a good idea to have a spare mask.
Exposure Suit
-
A correct fitting exposure suit (wetsuit or dry suit) suitable for the region is needed. Ensure that all zips and fastenings are working.
Instruments
-
Instruments include a depth gauge, compass and dive computer. These can be worn on the arm or the diver's console. Ensure that all are functioning and check the battery life on any electronic devices.
Signaling Device
-
A surface marker buoy (SMB) and a whistle are necessary tools for divers to attract attention at the surface. Ensure that the SMB has no leaks and that the whistle is working prior to packing them.
Dive Knife
-
A dive knife is used as a precaution against entanglement. It is either attached to the divers leg or BCD. Divers should make sure that the straps and clips on the dive knife sheath are intact.
Dive Specific Items
-
These can include a dive torch, underwater camera, dive reel or lift bag depending on the specific type of diving that is being done.
Certification and Log Book
-
Certification cards provide proof of the diver's training level and log books on their experience. It is also important to have the log book signed by a buddy or instructor following the dives, to build up the experience level.
