Difference Between SCUBA Fins & Boogie Board Fins

Many water enthusiasts appreciate activities on the surface and underwater, like boogie boarding and scuba diving. Well-fitting fins for scuba and boogie boarding optimize enjoyment and safety. Choose a fin of the appropriate length and material for your sport.
  1. Significance

    • Scuba and boogie boarding fins are specialty equipment that enables us to get around, either around a coral reef or to the next wave. As such, fins are designed to facilitate movement through the water without causing excess muscle fatigue.

    Fin Length

    • Fin design and length are determined by whether it's used underwater or on the surface of the water. Freediving fins are the longest (for deep dives) and pool swim fins are the shortest (on a calm surface); scuba and boogie boarding fins fall close to each extreme, respectively.

    Boogie Board Fins

    • Boogie board fins are short, rubber swim fins that are angled to quickly move through the water surface (to catch the wave). These compact fins are usually tethered to the boarder's ankles (like the boogie board) to reduce losing gear or injury while rolling in the surf.

    Scuba Fins

    • Scuba diving fins are longer and stiffer than swim fins so that the diver can maneuver quickly through mid-water or against a current. These fins are designed for efficient kick propulsion to reduce muscle fatigue (but not speed).

    Misconceptions

    • No single pair of fins should be used for boogie boarding, body boarding, snorkeling and scuba diving because each sport has its unique needs, based on water conditions, above and below the water surface. Boogie boarding and body boarding can use the same type of fins; snorkeling and scuba can use similar fins (remember, sturdier fins are better for cold water).
