How to Pick a Boogie Board

Ride the ocean waves with a boogie board at almost any age. Pick a boogie board based on body size, budget and the kind of waves at the beach. Unlike surfing, basic boogie boarding is easy to pick up within the first few runs, and the sport is as simple or as technical as you wish.

      Decide on a budget for the boogie board. The cost is $20 for something very basic on up to $300 for the technical models.

      Find a retail outlet that carries a variety of boogie boards in different price ranges with knowledgeable staff to help you pick the right one.

      Look at the construction of different boogie boards in your budget range. Basic construction is a styrofoam core with hard plastic on the bottom and fabric covering (often neoprene) on the top.

      Place the tail of a boogie board on the ground. The right length is one that reaches your waist.

      Turn the boogie board to a horizontal position and tuck it under your arm. Pick one that fits comfortably and allows you to hold the bottom edge.

      Pick a boogie board with a tether strap. One end is attached to the front of the boogie board and the other has a Velcro strap to attach to the wrist.
