1
Hold your compass in your hands in front of you. Align the red lubber line with the center of your body. Avoid tilting the compass, keeping it level so the needle moves direction when you do.
-
2
Point the lubber line in the direction that you intend to travel. Turn the dial of the compass to set the index marks on it so that they are aligned with the compass needle.
-
3
Follow the heading, keeping the compass needle between the index marks. If the compass needle is not between the index marks on the dial, you have moved off course.
-
4
Turn the dial to set a reciprocal heading. Rotate the dial 180 degrees and move your body so the compass needle sits between the dial index marks. As you travel, keep the compass needle between the marks.
-
5
Make a turn with the compass. If you are navigating a pre-determined course then rotate the dial the desired number of degrees that you wish to turn. Rotate your body to align the compass needle with the marks and follow the course.
