Wrestling Mat Cleaning System

To prevent the spread of bacteria and diseases, clean wrestling mats thoroughly after use. Wrestling mats should only be cleaned with cloths or mops reserved for that purpose. Do not use items reserved for the wrestling mat to clean any other areas, as this may spread bacteria and viruses. Coaches or instructors should ensure that all athletes who use the wrestling mat do not have communicable skin diseases or open wounds. Athletes should follow stringent hygiene guidelines, such as laundering workout clothes after each use and showering daily. The protective headgear should also be cleaned after each use.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the mat for signs of damage. A damaged mat should be replaced, rather than cleaned, as the disinfectant may not work properly.

    • 2

Remove any tape used to secure the wrestling mat or join two mats together.

    • 3

Clean the mat daily, if it is used daily, with a disinfectant. Fairfax County Public Schools recommends mixing 10 parts water to one part bleach in a bucket. Thoroughly wet a clean cloth or mop in the solution and wipe down the entire surface.

    • 4

Dry the surface with another clean cloth. Allow the mat to thoroughly air-dry; you may use a fan to circulate the air and speed the drying process.

    • 5

Flip the mat over, if it is not permanently secured to the floor. Clean the underside of the mat in the same manner used for the top of the mat. Clean the floor underneath the mat. Do this at least weekly.

    • 6

Clean bloody or similarly soiled parts of the wrestling mat immediately; do not wait until after the wrestling practice. Don latex gloves and wipe up the blood or other bodily fluid with a disposable cloth or paper towel. Treat the area with either an aerosol disinfectant suitable for bodily fluids, or by using the bleach mixture. Wipe the disinfectant off with paper towels and allow the mat to thoroughly dry.
