How to Do a Snap Down in Wrestling

In wrestling, a take down is a way to score points and gain a dominant position over an opponent. Most take down techniques involve attacking your opponent's legs, or tying up the upper body to attempt a throw. The snap down is a basic technique takedown technique that does not employ either of these common tactics.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie up with your opponent, and put one arm behind your opponent's head, and the other with an overhand grip over one of his triceps.

    • 2

Explosively tug with both arms as if to spike your opponent's head into the mat under one of your hips. As you do this, jumping your feet back as you would in a sprawl can give you additional power in snapping your opponent's head down.

    • 3

The sudden pressure will cause your opponent to stumble forward toward the hip that you spike him toward. If he goes down to his knees, quickly circle behind him to secure a takedown. If he does not go down to his knees, but the snap clearly destabalized him snap several more times to see if he will collapse to his knees.

Opponents with a strong stance will be nearly impossible to topple forward with a snap down, but it can still be used to rattle them and set them up for other moves. By tugging them forward, their natural reaction is to pull back and up, which can expose the legs for a follow up shot and a single or double leg takedown.
