How to Do Basic Stances in Wrestling

When beginning from the neutral position in a competitive wrestling match, having a strong stance can be the difference between a win and a loss. These steps will show you how to execute 2 of the most popular basic wrestling stances.

Instructions

  1. Sugar Foot Stance

    • 1

Place your dominant foot in front but not so far in front that you're off balance. This will put your stronger hand in front and allow you to more effectively grab your opponent. The toes of your forward foot should point at your opponent. The head, shoulder, elbow and knee should all be in a straight line with your front foot. This stance is a better attack position and gives you better forward and backward motion.

    • 2

Put your back foot at a 45-degree angle. This foot will give you a strong push when you reach for your opponent and provide stability as you move.

    • 3

Keep your arms in front and your head up with your eyes on your opponent at all times.

    Basic Wide Stance

    • 4

Place your feet about shoulder width apart and side by side with your knees bent. As with the sugar foot stance, your head, shoulder, elbow and knee should all be in a straight line with your foot. This stance gives you a stronger base and better side-to-side motion.

    • 5

Hold your back straight and avoid hunching over in this position. This will help you stay balanced and ready for attacks from your opponent.

    • 6

Keep your arms in front and your head up with your eyes on your opponent at all times.
