How to: Lateral Throw

Wrestling is a grappling martial art in which two competitors face off against each other, with each attempting to throw his opponent to the ground and pin the opponent's shoulders to the mat. The throws and takedowns of wrestling are often used in other arts as well as during mixed martial arts competitions. The lateral throw, also known as the lateral drop as the thrower drops his weight down to complete it, is a basic takedown throw that lands the thrower on top of his opponent with side control.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure an overhook by wrapping one arm around the bicep of your opponent's opposite arm. For example, an overhook with your left arm would be attained by securing your opponent's right arm.

    • 2

Grab your opponent's second wrist with your remaining hand. This is known as wrist control.

    • 3

Drive your weight into your opponent using the shoulder you have an overhook with to get your opponent off balance.

    • 4

Pull your opponent's wrist toward you to get his momentum moving at you.

    • 5

Step in between your opponent's legs with the leg that matches the arm you have wrist control with.

    • 6

Step back with your other leg and lean back.

    • 7

Turn your shoulders toward the side you have an overhook as you fall back to pull your opponent up and over, flipping your opponent to the mat.
