How to Cheerlead Dance

Cheerleaders are a traditional part of athletic events such as football and basketball at the high school, college and professional levels. Cheerleaders typically perform a cheer routine between plays or at regular scheduled intervals. During longer breaks, such as half-time, cheer squads may perform a dance routine to prerecorded music. The dance many times will incorporate cheer moves, gymnastics and a wide variety of dance styles.

Instructions

  1. Cheerlead Dancing

    • 1

Assemble a squad or group of individuals to perform the dance. The individuals may or may not have dance, cheer or gymnastics experience but should be outgoing, show spirit and not be afraid of performing in front of large groups.

    • 2

Arrange a dance routine or have a routine choreographed. In most situations a cheer coach will arrange a dance, however, there may be times when a more advanced or experienced dance professional will arrange the dance based on skill level of the dancers.

    • 3

Practice the routine, taking time to work out problems in execution or make changes in moves that may not translate well to the crowd. Keep in mind that the routine should be high energy to match the atmosphere of the athletic event.

    • 4

Select costumes for the dance. Many times, a specially arranged dance may inspire the dancers to change from their regular uniforms into costumes or outfits that better suit the dance routine. This typically goes over well with crowds because it introduces another level of interest.

    • 5

Perform and evaluate the initial performance. Many times there are unforeseen logistical problems that occur during the perform of the dance. Take time at the next practice to evaluate the performance and make changes.
